This thesis will analyze contemporary portrayals of African American women in popular culture and visual arts in the context of Black female racial stereotypes. It will first introduce the stereotypes and describe their controlling nature in order to explain how they continue to reinforce the oppression of black women, and then explore how these stereotypes are challenged in selected contemporary portrayals of Black womanhood.
