The pursuit of self-determination by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Southeast
Nigeria has profound socio-economic upheavals. This piece examines the effects of the activities
of IPOB and, more specifically, the effects of the sit-at-home orders on South East development.
The argument contends that although the IPOB’s issues are justifiable on marginalization in
history and resonance of self-determination, the consequences of their actions are undesirable in
the economy. These include loss of trade, business losses, and unemployment. The social effects
include fear and insecurity and a reduction in the level of education that may be achieved.
This notes that the South East has zones of relative affluence. It, however, maintains that the
activities of the IPOB take away such prosperity from the society’s productive sectors. The piece
probably ends with urging all aggrieved parties thus, IPOB, Nigeria’s government and the people
of the Southeast to begin deliberations that would focus on the grievance without neglecting the
economic development of the region.
