Course objectives
The aim of this course is to help students achieve B2 level knowledge of English by 1) enhancing all language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and systems (vocabulary and grammar) within the given level by means of topics and current issues related to special needs education; 2)developing students' academic skills: (CV and cover letter, Master's thesis abstract and literature review.)
Syllabus
  • 1) Career and job opportunities for special educators. 2) Specific learning difficulties. 3) Autistic spectrum disorders. 4) Behavioural disorders I (ADHD). 5) Behavioural disorders II (ODD and CD). 6) Mental health. 7) Academic writing - thesis abstract + foreign information sources on SNE. 8) Current cure methods. 9) Practical skills: CV and cover letter. 10) Practical skills: job interview. 11) Institutional and protective education. Grammar: Conditionals; Articles; Countable and uncountable nouns, Quantifiers; some, any, no…; Reported speech; Prepositional phrases; sentence transformations III; Phrasal verbs.

Teaching methods
Weekly ninety-minute seminars designed for teaching English for specific and academic purposes (acitvities developing students' awarness of language skills and systems within B2 level - listening and reading tasks; grammar and vocabulary practice, discussions and other speaking activities, e-learning for practising specialist terminology and grammar etc.
Assessment methods
Credit requirements: Attendance (max. 2 absences) + active participation + homework – 10 marks; Submitted assignment (thesis abstract + lit. review) on the date of the oral exam; EXAM – 2 parts: Written (electronic testing): Listening, reading, grammar, ST, word formation, writing – 60 marks, SNE terminology – 30 marks, TOTAL: 100 marks, Pass mark = 70 marks. Oral – A) monologue (3 min) + B) spoken interaction between two students (6 min). TOTAL: 75 marks, Pass mark = 41 marks.
