Course objectives
The aim of this course is to help students achieve B2 level knowledge of English by 1) enhancing all language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and systems (vocabulary and grammar) by means of up-to-date topics related to professinal career or academic sphere within the given level; 2)developing students' academic skills: (students produce a CV and covering letter, Master's thesis abstract and literature review.)
Syllabus
  • Topics: 1) Work, job opportunities/application/interviews..; 2) Professional career of a special educator; Plans for future; 3) Communication, information; 4) Science, technology, research; 5) People and society. Grammar: Articles; countable and uncountable nouns, quantifiers; some, any, no…; reported speech; prepositional phrases; linking expressions; phrasal verbs; "make" X "do"; modals (must/could/should have done....). Test practice: Sentence transformations, word formation... Academic writing: 1) A CV and covering letter; 2) Master's thesis abstract; 3) Literature review;

Teaching methods
Weekly ninety-minute seminars designed for teaching English for specific and academic purposes (acitvities developing students' awarness of language skills and systems within B2 level - listening and reading tasks; grammar and vocabulary practice, discussions and other speaking activities etc.).
Assessment methods
Weekly 90-minute seminars. Credit requirements: 1) Attendance (85%) and active participation in classes; 2) Submitted in-term assignments A) CV + covering letter B) Master's thesis abstract C) Literature review of Master's thesis sources in English (must be submitted in IS.MUNI in written form prior to the exam); 3) Respecting all deadlines; 4) Exam: 2 parts: A) written (parts: listening, reading comprehension, use of English, writing; level B2; pass mark: 70%) B) oral (presentation of student’s bachelor’s or master’s thesis) (The final mark is based on the test score (70%) and oral exam (30%).
