Course objectives
The course is designed to develop especially the following: 1) Specialized language related to student’s subject/s of study. 2) Academic skills: writing: summary/annotation, CV, motivation letter, job application 3) "Abstract" vocabulary 4) Grammar (level B2) 5) Language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) by means of up-to-date topics related to education or academic sphere.

  • W 1 – 4 Work, professional career, plans for future (discussion, listening, reading, vocabulary) Academic skills: CV, motivation letter, job application Grammar: “Cizí jazyk C” revision; W 5 – 7 Science, technology, research (discussion, listening, reading, vocabulary) Academic skills: Summary/annotation of an academic text (structure, cohesion of the text…) Grammar: Countable and uncountable nouns Phrasal verbs II; W 8 – 10 People and society (discussion, listening, reading, vocabulary) Grammar: Adjectives + prepositions Adjectives, adverbs (use; -ed X –ing, absolute adjectives…); W 11 – 14 Communication, information (discussion, listening, reading, vocabulary) Grammar: Modals II (must be, must have been; can’t be, could have been; should be, should have been/done; could be, could have been/done) Prepositions of time, place…

Assessment methods (in Czech)
In-term assignments: A) CV, motivation letter, job application (assigned in W 3, first draft due on W 6, second draft due on W 10) B) A brief background research on final thesis sources in English (must be submitted in written form prior to the exam to IS.MUNI (E-learning ODEVZDAVARNA) - BY 15 MAY 2008). Credit requirements: 1) Attendance 2) Completed in-term assignments 3) Exam – 2 parts: A) written (4 parts: listening, reading comprehension, use of English, writing; level B2; passing limit 65%) B) oral (presentation of student’s bachelor’s or master’s thesis) Final mark is based on the test score (70%) and oral exam (30%).
