Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to: understand and explain that Genre Studies (Genology) or the science of literary kinds and genres is considered as a specific part of theory of literature; interpret its roots going back to the ancient world, although the genology as an independent discipline of literary criticism emerged only at the 30th of the 20th century;work with information on the journal Zagadnienia rodzajów literackich founded in Polish Łódź at the end of 50th of 20th centure and has been describing development and changes of various literary genres already fifty years;work with research of the Department of Slavonic Studies (Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University) oriented genologically, its results are being presented in the periodical Litteraria Humanitas; learn of the most important publications in this field and submit a chapter in their doctoral thesis, where the study of that discipline will be used to its treatment.

  • 2. The formation of genology as an independent scientific discipline
  • 3. Lyric poetry, specificity of lyric genres and their historical transformations
  • 4. Epic poetry and its historical transformations
  • 5. Variety of genres of dramatic literature
  • 6. The principle of diffusion of different genres
  • 7. Enrichment of literary genres by other kinds of art (collage, symphony etc.)
  • 8. Sketh, short story, novella
  • 9. Novel and its transformations
  • 10. Genres and mass media
  • 11. Specification on the genre, which is an objekt of graduant student’s research
  • 12. Application to student’s own research
