Course objectives
The aim of this new subject taught in Czech, is to teach new methods of analysis and forming of professional terms in selected fields of the humanities. Apart from that, it strives to improve the level of writing in the university environment with the use of word forming, stylistic and purely formal skills (connections in text, rhetorical means, argumentation, quoting styles and generators). Students will be able to communicate more efficiently terminology, not only in their own field of study but also in related fields. Students will be able to analyze different terms from the word forming point of view and will be able to see the possibility of its different interpretations. They will be able to find their bearings in texts with unfamiliar internacionalisms and terms. They will exercise their critical thinking skills and the ability to evaluate their own texts (both grammatically and stylistically). The course will be finished by a credit test focusing mainly on terms analysis, and understanding and forming of internacionalisms.
Syllabus
  • Morphological and lexical analysis of terms • Latin prefixes and contemporary Greek prefixes, basic changes in derived words in Czech and other languages • Substantives and adjectives used in international context today • Basic terms and their etymology used in law, philosophy, sociology, history, economy, banking and also literature • Introduction to drafting and revising specialized text •Introduction to stylistics
Teaching methods
Students will be given a theoretical backround which will lead to practical exercises with the aim of practicing forming internationalisms and using terms their fields of study. They will also learn to analyse terms in a detailed way, as well as good habits for creating academic texts. Students will get a chance to experience the basics of text correction of a rough text, they will also create short texts with the use of rhetorical figures and learn to use different forms of argumentation in texts they will create themselves.
Assessment methods
Semester is ended by a colloquium.
