Course objectives
Need of protection and regeneration of cultural values is naturally projected to a range of human activities, to development strategies and to creation of developmnet documents on all levels of elaboration and realization. Orientation in processes of knowledge, legislative tools and professional ensuring of the process are the basis for cultural values communication, interpretation and realization of regeneration .
Monument preservation is a set of activities with independent legislation and care of cultural values is a part of physical planning process as a part of the limits ensuring protection of landscape character and protection of urbanistic a architectural heritage of our towns and villages. In this process regional policy and administration is unsubstitutable. Graduates of these studies will work in institutions of state government, self-government and organizations and subjects of private sector. They are supposed to be able to communicate and work on documents in working groups of state government, self-governments of towns and municipalities, professional organizations and clients – investors, designers and public.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to:
- understand and explain the necessity of protection and regeneration of cultural values;
- be well informed in the legislation, as well as in the expert securing of the process;
- interpret the role of the regional policy during the process of protection and regeneration of cultural values;
- work with information for the understanding of the collective character of this process;
- make deductions based on acquired knowledge in the field of the process of protection and regeneration of cultural values with a special wiev on the regional development questions
Syllabus
  • 1. Significance of preservation, presentation and possibilities of evaluation, new forms of cultural heritage utilization – understanding the significance and need of relationship to cultural values, basic information about monument preservation and current possibilities of cultural heritage utilization.
  • 2. Architectural and urbanistic heritage of the Czech Republic in European context – overview of important architectural and urbanistic styles, significant European buildings and their authors (visual examples).
  • 3. Structure of architectural and urbanistic heritage – characteristic types of buildings, visual examples of the most importatant objects in the Czech Republic.
  • 4. International institutions, documents and forms of cultural heritage protection, world cultural heritage – overview of international documents connected with protection of cultural estates; list of World Cultural Heritage and characteristics of relevant objects in the Czech Republic that have been listed (presentation of the objects and their locations).
  • 5. Current care of cultural values and monuments, legislative in the Czech Republic – overview of legislation concerning of monument preservation, related regulations, notices and agreements, sate institutions for monument preservation in the Czech Republic.
  • 6. Importance of monument in history, in town structure and cityscape (example of architectural development in Brno) – architectural style stages in relation to historical events, reconstructions of object and its functional changes, contemporary utilization of castle and castle hill (presentation of contemporary procedure of reconstruction).
  • 7. Forms of protection of historic settlements and their parts – significance and development of protection of historic towns, conception and process of spatial protection, documents, international agreements, creation of regulatives and basic principles for regeneration (presentation with examples).
  • 8. Conception of interventions in bild up area, changes in individual function types – risks threatening preservation of cultural values, tools and regulatives, means of positive development in preservation of cultural values (presentation with examples of appropriate and inappropriate interventions).
  • 9. Cultural values in landscape, picture of landscape and changes of landscape character – explanation of terminology, development stages of landscape, contemporary landscape and elements of landscape character, limits of area utilization, interventions influencing landscape character, protection of landscape and landscape character (presentation with examples of appropriate and inappropriate interventions).
  • 10. Problems of cultural values in rural environment – cultural values in rural environment, structure, development possibilities and principles for preservation of cultural values on community level (presentation with examples).
  • 11. Recovery conception of monuments and historical structures – procedures, methods, new functional utilization, project documentation of recovery and reconstruction.
  • 12. Constructions, materials and technologies in proposal and realization of recovery – survey of constructional and material issues of objects in individual style periods, current opinions on usage of materials for recovery and reconstruction of objects of historical cultural heritage.
  • 13. Cultural environment, genius loci, authenticity of environment – commented examples of preservation, revitalization and/or disturbing of authentic environment.

Teaching methods
The theoretical part uses the form of the study hour (the self-study) following the recommended texts as well as the assigned literature. In the course of the semester there are some intensive lessons. They supply the study with the interpretation of specified topics, and with the documentation of the examples of reconstruction of the cultural values. For the practical part of the lesson there is a seminary work. Student analyses, characterizes, and values the chosen municipality with its cultural and heritage policy. The presentation, and reconstruction of the cultural values are of special concern here. The student may choose also some examples of the historical cultural heritage.
