Course objectives
Main objectives can be summarized as follows:
- to extend knowledge of banking and insurance industry;
- to teach how to use this knowledge in business environment more globally (special emphasis put on combining theory and practice);
- to analyze particular problems of banking and insurance industry;
- to develop creative approach to solution proposal;
- to evaluate feedback logically.
Syllabus
  • Content plan and thematic focus of seminars (according to weeks of instruction):
  • 1. Introductory seminar, organization of seminars, terms of assessment and completion of the subject, seminar works submission
  • 2. Block: Banking I. (Banking system, regulation, structure, types; Central bank, objectives, functions, tools, European System of Central Banks; Monetary policy transmission mechanism.)
  • 3. Block: Banking II. (Grounds for regulation and supervision of banks; Rules of prudent business activities of banks; Interbank system of payments in the Czech Republic and the European Union.)
  • 4. Block: Banking III. (eBanking, products and further development; Specialized banking, reasons for its existence, specialized banks.)
  • 5. Block: Banking IV. (Loans granted by commercial banks, types, risks, the creditworthiness of borrowers, credit securing; Passive bank trades, types of deposit products, bank bonds issue, interbank market trades.)
  • 6. Block: Banking V. (Alternative forms of financing, factoring, forfaiting, venture capital, leasing; Investment banking, term, integration into the banking system, types of operations; Bank as a business entity, balance, liquidity, stability, solvency, costs and revenues.)
  • 7. Block: Banking VI. (Bank accounting, methodology, regulation, chart of accounts, basic terms; Bank accounting specifics, financial statements of banks; Off-balance sheet operations of commercial banks, bookkeeping, risks, impact on profitability, types of bank guarantees.)
  • 8. Block: Insurance Industry I. (Definition of insurance, its importance and position in the economy and and functioning principles. Classification of insurance, classification criteria and examples. Characteristics of the selected insurance product; Definition of the insurance relationship, its content, participants, their rights and duties. Characteristics and content of insurance terms, their structure and importance; Characteristics of insurance and reinsurance business in the area of the Czech Republic’s insurance industry (according to the Act on Insurance); Characteristics of intermediaries’ activities in the insurance of the Czech Republic (according to the Act on Insurance Intermediaries and Insurance Claims Adjusters.)
  • 9. Block: Insurance Industry II. (Characteristics of the insurance industry in the Czech Republic, its structure and subjects. Characteristics of associations in the insurance industry, their importance, mission and main objectives. International institutions in the insurance industry; Characteristics of tasks and activities of insurance industry supervision and its competence according to the Act on the Insurance Industry in the Czech Republic; Insurance market definition, its segmentation, basic indicators of its level and application in conditions of the Czech Republic, including trends introduction.)
  • 10. Block: Insurance Industry III. (Reinsurance definition, its principles, functions and classification possibilities; Proportional and non-proportional reinsurance – definition, methods, advantages and disadvantages, liability types; Legal nature of the reinsurance (in general context as well as in the Czech Republic), reinsurance treaty and its clause.)
  • 11. Block: Insurance Industry IV. (Definition risk in terms of the insurance industry, risks classification, relationship between insurance and risk, risks insurability criteria; Methodology of risk management in the commercial insurance company, means of financial risks coverage – its advantages and disadvantages, the importance and content of Solvency II.)
  • 12. Block: Insurance Industry V. (Characteristics of the commercial insurance company as a business entity and its tasks. Organizational structure of the commercial insurance company, the role of the economic section and its principal activities; The importance of the commercial insurance company’s capital. The minimum amount of capital needed in particular class of insurance according to the Act on the Insurance Industry.)
  • 13. Block: Insurance Industry VI. (Management of commercial insurance company, costs and revenues structure, financial statements; The principle of creation and use of technical provisions for life and non-life insurance, financial placement principles, its limits and structure.)

Teaching methods
seminars - processing and presentation of a seminar project, class discussion
Assessment methods
The course finishes with an oral colloquium. It will focus on subject matter discussed in seminars.
Students may take the colloquium after the following requierements have been met:
a) Processing, submission (in written and electronic form) and PowerPoint presentation of a seminar project of assigned topic will be assessed either passed or failed. Requirements for admission to the colloquium: - the seminar project assessed "passed".
b) attendance at 10 seminars at least.
If a student commits a prohibited act, such as using various forbidden tools (e.g. cheatsheets) or any other form of cheating, the teacher is allowed to grade the student with N according to the seriousness of the offence.
