Course objectives
The main aim of this course is entering meeting with banking problems. The knowledge gained in this course will be applied in the next banking courses of the Finance specialization. The course is focused on analysis of central bank operations, the role of the central bank in the economy, its functions and tools. Further, in the course students will be introduced with commercial banking problems, function of commercial bank, active and passive kinds of bank business and kinds of bank in banking system.
Course objectives:
At the end of the course, student will be able to understand basic functions of banking system in the Czech Republic and the European Union.

  • 2. Central bank, its role in economy, functions, tools, relations to commercial banks
  • 3. Central bank, transmission mechanism of monetary police, current tools of the monetary police, the European Central Bank, the European System of Central Banks
  • 4. Commercial banks, basic functions, shareholders capital, stability, liquidity, dividing of commercial bank business, balance of commercial banks
  • 5. Commercial banks, credit process, client rating, financial and non-financial indicators
  • 6. Kinds of commercial bank business, background, usage, project financing
  • 7. Alternative forms of financing, business with liabilities, joint venture, leasing, bank guarantees
  • 8. Interbank payments system in the Czech Republic and the EU, world systems, definition, background of cheque
  • 9. Foreign exchange operations, spot and futures operations, financial derivatives

Teaching methods
Attendance at lectures, submission of semester paper (POT), self-correction tests, check tests, final written test and exam.
Assessment methods
The course is finished by written exam. The Presumption of successful graduation of final exam is elaboration and delivery of written essay that will be corrected by tutor (POT) according to time schedule. It is an evidence of student home preparation in self-study with grade passed. Next condition is that student must successfully pass both scheduled control tests.
Final grade is consisted of:
Written part of examination (80 %) + final interpretation of student self-study during term – POTs Tests (20 %)
Tutorials are scheduled in three two-hour blocks; the content corresponds to topics as follows
1st tutorial: Topic 1-4
2nd tutorial: Topic 5 – 8, first test
3rd tutorial: Topic 9 – 13, second test
- To assess performance of students the following scale is applied (common to full-time and combined form of study):
A 92 - 100%
B 84 - 91%
C 76 - 83%
D 68 to 75%
E 60 - 67%
F less than 60%
Any copying, recording or leaking tests, use of unauthorized tools, aids and communication devices, or other disruptions of objectivity of exams (credit tests) will be considered non-compliance with the conditions for course completion as well as a severe violation of the study rules.
Consequently, the teacher will finish the exam (credit test) by awarding grade "F" in the Information System, and the Dean will initiate disciplinary proceedings that may result in study terminativ.
