Course objectives
The course introduces students to the basic facts in the Czech Republic, concerning distribution, development, changes and regional differentiation of vital socioeconomic phenomena and processes as follows: geographic and geopolitical location, population and its structure and dynamics, system of settlement, economic and social sphere, tourism and recreation, barriers to development, socioeconomic regionalizations, landuse and environment.
Syllabus
  • P 1 Basic physical geography characteristics of the Czech Republic. Geopolitical and transport location.
  • P 2 Trends of territorial and administrative organization of contemporary Czech Republic area.
  • P 3,4 Population. Regional distinction of demographic conditions. Population structure and dynamics (scholarship, qualifying structure, spatial mobility, migration processes].
  • P 5,6 Settlement system. Long-term trends in settlement process. Geopolitical changes consequences.
  • P 7 Economic scope I. Agricultural process, contemporary regional problems. Internal and external factors and their effect to capacity and structure. (privatization, ingression to the EU), consequences of agricultural production intensity and structure changes and land resources use.
  • P 8,9 Economic scope II. Industry. Specific characteristics of aggregate and regional industry. Producing and structural specifics, underdeveloped and perspective regions, developing and declining branchs.
  • P 10,11 Services. Long-term trends of services regional distinction, contemporary regional changes and regional spcifics. Retail tranformation.
  • P 12 Regional aspects of tourism trends. Tourism as a support chance of economically weak and underdeveloped regions.
  • P 13 Environment quality nad technical infrastructure. Landuse. Development barriers.
