Course objectives
I. Words and Meanings A survey of theoretical approaches to the lexicon in Europe from Aristotle to Pustejovsky, including Cicero, Wilkins, Leibniz, Johnson, Saussure, Trier, Porzig, Gipper, Hjelmslev, Coseriu, Lyons; Russell, Wittgenstein, Austin,Grice, Putnam, Kripke, Rosch, Lakoff; Bolinger, Fillmore, Langacker; Mel'cuk, Wilks, Jackendoff, Pustejovsky; Maurice Gross, Halliday, Sinclair and others. II. Practical Lexicography Typology of dictionaries - how to compile a major dictionary -- compiling a lexical database -- onomasiological and semasiological approaches -- macrostructure and microstructure -- collecting and analysing evidence -- phraseology -- idioms -- collocations -- sampling data -- statistical approaches -- norms and exploitations -- possible and probable word use -- xml structure of a dictionary -- tools -- definition writing -- grammar and the dictionary. Grades will be assigned on the basis of practical achievements in creating tools, structrues, analyses, draft database entries (in Czech or English), or other agreed practical work.
