- Abstract
- The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the basic theoretical and practical principles of developing strength abilities in sports training. Emphasis is placed on mastering the techniques of basic strength exercises, understanding methods of strength development and their periodization, including specifics across age categories. Another objective is to acquire the ability to safely apply the acquired knowledge in practice and to understand the basic principles of adaptation and evaluation of strength abilities.
- Learning outcomes
- Graduates of this course will be able to:
1. Explain the basic classification of strength abilities (static vs. dynamic strength; strength endurance, hypertrophy, maximum strength, explosive/power strength, reactive strength) and describe their physiological and biomechanical foundations.
2. Master the technique of basic strength exercises using traditional and modern training equipment and perform them safely and effectively.
3. Understand the basic principles of training adaptation and their manifestations.
4. Characterize the basic methods of developing individual types of strength abilities and understand their practical use in training practice.
5. Describe the basic principles of strength training periodization.
6. Apply basic methods of strength assessment and give examples of testing tools that can be used in training practice (e.g., 1RM, vertical jump, RFD, RPE).
7. Be able to describe the age-specific characteristics of strength development, especially in children and adolescents, and explain the importance of appropriate and specific loads at different stages of development.
8. Apply the principles of safety, technical correctness, and organization when conducting strength training, especially in a group setting. - Key topics

- Approaches, practices, and methods used in teaching
- - Practical exercises in the gym with demonstrations of the use of appropriate training equipment, techniques, and methods for developing strength abilities.
- Group exercises focused on strengthening cooperation, communication, and developing instructional skills.
- Combination of face-to-face practical teaching and online support, for example in the form of videos with exercise techniques and short e-learning modules.
- Practical training with peer feedback in an online environment, based on ongoing mutual evaluation of video recordings of exercise techniques according to pre-defined criteria.
- Formative testing and reflection throughout the semester, serving to actively memorize key concepts, self-reflection, and early identification of knowledge and skill gaps. - Method of verifying learning outcomes and course completion requirements
- Final exam – written online test in multiple choice format (30 questions – a, b, c, d – multiple correct answers), grading: A = 28–30 points, B = 25–27 points, C = 23–24 points, D = 21–22 points, E = 19–20 points, F = 18 points or less.
Prerequisites for admission to the exam: 1. Exercise technique – evaluation: passed/failed (maximum number of corrections after the first submission is 2 corrections). The task is to shoot video clips (edited into one file) demonstrating the technique of basic exercises according to the list and submit them to the submission system.
2. Online peer feedback in the information system for 2 topics – evaluate at least 5 different videos (i.e., from different students) for both topics. In total, the student will perform 10 peer feedback evaluations in the online information system.
Evidence and progress of the evaluation will be recorded in notebooks and submission folders in the information system (is.muni.cz). - Language of instruction
