Abstract
The course is designed to provide students with practical knowledge of Graeco-Latin medical terminology, primarily related to the field of Physical Therapy. Students will gain proficiency in the grammatical concepts and medical terminology necessary for understanding authentic medical reports. Additionally, they will master the pronunciation of medical terms.
Learning outcomes
Graduates of this course will:
- acquire command of anatomical and clinical terminology related to Physical Therapy;
- learn basics of Latin grammar;
- learn proper pronunciation of Latin and Greek medical terms;
- be able to read medical reports, and understand abbreviations used in them.

  • 01. Úvod do problematiky kurzu, cíle, obsah, výslovnost v latině, přehled latinského gramatického systému, hlavní roviny a směry lidského těla.
  • 02. Přehled latinských deklinací, 1. deklinace (latinská a řecká substantiva), adjektiva, vybrané předložky, typy zlomenin.
  • 03. Latinská a řecká substantiva 2. deklinace, adjektiva, klasifikace svalů.
  • 04. Latinská a řecká substantiva 3.deklinace - souhláskové kmeny, typy ran a poranění.
  • 05. Latinská a řecká substantiva 3.deklinace - i-kmeny, termíny označující poruchy vyžadující fyzioterapii.
  • 06. Latinská substantiva 4. a 5. deklinace, termíny označující bolest.
  • 07. Adjektiva 3. deklinace, nejčastěji užívané zkratky v lékařských zprávách.
  • 08. Stupňování adjektiv, číslovky, označení kraniálních nervů a všech obratlů.
  • 09. Latinské a řecké předpony a přípony, slova odvozená.
  • 10. Složená slova, názvy fyzioterapeutických technik vycházející z latiny a řečtiny.
  • 11. Autentické lékařské zprávy – čtení s porozuměním, rozbor.
  • 12. Opakování.
  • 13. Zkouškový test.

Approaches, practices, and methods used in teaching
The course is conducted in the form of language seminars: reading, writing, speaking, and grammar practice. Selected chapters from the textbooks are supplemented with additional materials – handouts. Regular homework preparation is required.
Method of verifying learning outcomes and course completion requirements
The course is concluded with an online written test (the requirement for passing is at least 70% correct answers) and an oral exam = answering one of the selected topics, reading, and analyzing authentic medical reports. Topics for the oral exam are provided in the study materials. Attendance is mandatory.
