Course objectives
The aim of the Introduction to Sports Training course is to teach students:
- interpret the basic premises of sports training,
- define sport performance and its structure, describe the determinants of sport performance,
- to acquire the basic means of swimming and athletics, forms and methods of development of physical abilities and skills used in sports training across sports disciplines,
- apply the methods, forms and means of development of movement abilities and skills in selected swimming and athletics disciplines,
- design plans for training units aimed at developing movement abilities and skills in swimming and athletics.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, learners will be able to:
- interpret the basic principles of sports training;
- define the basic concepts of sports training;
- describe and apply in practice the means, forms and methods used in the sports training of swimming and athletics;
- implement technically correct basic strength, speed, endurance and coordination exercises;
- define the structure of athletic performance in selected sports disciplines.

  • LECTURES:
  • 1. Sports training.
  • 2. Structure of sports performance - factors.
  • 3. Technical, tactical and psychological preparation.
  • 4. Strength training and conditioning.
  • 5. Training load and loading.
  • 6. Training session - basics of planning.
  • 7. Determinants of speed performance, methods of developing speed skills and specifics of speed training.
  • 8. Determinants and methods of developing strength abilities and specifics of strength training.
  • 9. Determinants of endurance abilities, methods of endurance development and specifics of endurance training.
  • 10. Determinants of coordination performance, methods of developing coordination abilities, development of coordination abilities.
  • 11. Determinants and development of flexibility.
  • SEMINAR:
  • 1. The use of swimming and athletics in the conditioning of other sports.
  • 2. Application of speed development methods used in athletics and swimming (reaction, start, acceleration and maximal speed) for different sports disciplines.
  • 3. Application of explosive strength skill development methods used in athletics and swimming (vertical and horizontal jumps + two-handed medicine ball throws) for various sport disciplines.
  • 4. Application of the methods of development of endurance abilities used in athletics and swimming (continuous, intense and extensive interval, repetition) for various sports disciplines.
  • 5. Application of methods of development of coordination skills used in athletics (frequency exercises, hurdles, athletic ABC) and swimming.
  • 6. Application of flexibility development methods used in athletics and swimming (mobilization exercises, warm-up before competition and training, static stretching).

Theoretical preparation and practical excersises
Assessment methods
The student will be assessed on the basis of:
- oral examination
- practical demonstration of a sufficient level of selected movement skills in swimming and athletics (pass/fail), which are used as a means of sports training in other sports
- elaboration of a project (preparation of training sessions using swimming and athletics means in fitness training of other sports) with peer-feedback
