Abstract
The course introduces students to the role of Sports Medicine in close collaboration with Physiotherapy. Emphasis is placed on the diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of sports injuries and overuse conditions. Students will acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for working with recreational and professional athletes.
Learning outcomes
Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
- understand the field of Sports Medicine, including its history, significance, the role of a physiotherapist, and the system of medical examinations for athletes;
- utilize diagnostic methods—assess physical fitness, conduct exercise testing, and analyze body composition;
- identify cardiological risks in sports—recognize the danger of heart failure, recommend physical activity for cardiology patients, and interpret exercise ECG results;
- understand the diagnosis and treatment of acute sports injuries, tendinopathies, stress fractures, and myofascial pain;
- comprehend sports orthopedics—identify common joint and musculoskeletal injuries and determine appropriate treatment;
- design a rehabilitation plan after injuries—adapt therapy to the healing process and establish criteria for returning to sports;
- provide care for pediatric and adolescent athletes;
- consider gender differences in sports;
- develop an exercise program for seniors and recreational athletes;
- adhere to ethical and legal standards in sports medicine;
- understand the principles of preventive and therapeutic approaches for physically active individuals.
