Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to provide students with a basic framework of knowledge about the main procedures, methods and skills used in the field of addictionology and the diagnosis of risk factors for the emergence of addictions and risky health behaviors with implications for the development of civilizational diseases. Students will gain an overview of the problem of the emergence and development of addictions and addictive behavior, their effects on the human organism and the impact on the quality of life. They will be introduced to the system of treatment and prevention in the given area with a focus on accentuating a healthy lifestyle as an important predictor of health behavior in the context of preventing the development of civilization diseases, with a focus on the positive benefits of exercise and nutrition. Emphasis will also be placed on the development of relevant skills in the area of ​​identification and diagnosis of risk factors for the emergence of addictions and risky behavior towards health, the creation and implementation of effective preventive strategies and intervention measures, the creation of procedures and methods for verifying their effectiveness. Students of the course will acquire relevant competences in the field of work ethics with clients and groups of people, and will acquire adequate personal development procedures in the given area and principles of first aid in cases of acute intoxication with addictive substances.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to:
- apply in practice basic knowledge of addictionology as a scientific discipline that deals with the study of addiction to various substances and related behavior;
- understand the different types of addictions and their impact on the physical and mental health of an individual, and at the same time they will be able to identify risk factors associated with the emergence of addictions and risky behavior towards health;
- understand the relationship between risk factors and lifestyle, including diet and physical activity;
- master the basic tools and methods for diagnosing risk factors associated with the emergence of addictions and carry out assessments of clients' lifestyles, including diet and exercise;
- identify how physical activity and proper nutrition can influence physiological, psychological and social factors associated with the development of addiction;
- to master the relevant methods and procedures enabling the identification of areas that may increase the risk of addiction for target groups of people;
- orientate in the possibilities and limits of preventive measures and current strategies for the prevention of addictions and diseases of civilization;
- to design and implement programs aimed at supporting a healthy lifestyle, including proper nutrition and physical activity, which reduce the risk of their occurrence;
- understand the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation in a given field, such as addictionology, nutrition, movement therapy and psychology, thanks to which they will gain a comprehensive view of the prevention of addictions and civilizational diseases;
- understand the ethical and professional issues associated with the prevention of addictions, they will understand the importance of respect, confidentiality and professional behavior when working with individuals who are at risk of addictions;
- develop their knowledge and skills in the area of ​​research, they will be ready to analyze and evaluate data on the effectiveness of preventive measures in the area of ​​movement and nutrition in the prevention of addictions and civilization diseases;
- interpret the results of investigations in the field of prevention and propose targeted application research studies;
- and motivated to personal development and reflection on their own lifestyle, including eating and exercise, while they will be able to create and maintain healthy habits that will help them lead a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
Syllabus
  • 1. Addictionology as an applied scientific discipline (subject, position in the system of sciences, specifics of clinical addictionology, basic methods, tools and procedures applied in addictionology practice). The importance of interdisciplinary cooperation in the field of addiction (psychology, psychiatry, nutrition, exercise therapy, etc.).
  • 2. Internal (biological, personality) and external factors (cultural, socio-economic, historical and environmental) influencing the behavior of individuals and groups of people towards health and addictive behavior - an overview of current research results in the Czech Republic and abroad. Impacts of addictions on the health and quality of life of the client and his social environment.
  • 3. Definition of addiction and relevant terminology (use, misuse, abuse, craving, tolerance, defense mechanisms, withdrawal symptoms, relapse), addiction syndrome, types of addiction (overview of addiction to addictive substances, specific addictions of the non-substance type). Internal and external factors affecting the emergence and development of addiction to addictive substances, occurrence in the population and accompanying symptoms.
  • 4. Eating disorders, workaholism, pathological gambling, Internet addiction, etc., internal and external factors influencing their emergence and development, occurrence in the population and accompanying symptoms. The problem of relapse and the possibility of relapse prevention.
  • 5. Identification and diagnosis of risk factors for the emergence of addictions and risky health behaviors (methods, procedures and tools for identifying factors associated with the emergence of addictions and risky health behaviors, especially in relation to movement and nutrition), including lifestyle assessment and identification of areas , which may increase the risk of addiction.
  • 6. Addiction treatment system in the Czech Republic (outpatient treatment, inpatient treatment, therapy groups, self-help groups, counseling, online counseling). The importance of nutrition and movement in the treatment of addictions and civilization diseases (regime measures, nutritional measures, modification or change of the existing lifestyle).
  • 7. Primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of addictions and risky behavior to health in the Czech Republic in the area of ​​exercise and nutrition. Principles for creating and implementing effective preventive strategies and intervention measures, methods of verifying their effectiveness.
  • 8. The influence of exercise and nutrition on addiction prevention, the relationship between exercise, nutrition and addiction prevention. Possibilities of setting the right lifestyle in the area of ​​exercise and nutrition in the context of influencing physiological, psychological and social factors associated with the emergence of addictions and risky behavior towards health.
  • 9. Ethics and professionalism in the field of addiction prevention (respect, confidentiality and main principles of ethical behavior when working with individuals and groups at risk of addictions and risky health behaviour).
  • 10. Research in the context of addiction prevention and health risk behavior (basic research designs, methods and procedures of collection, analysis and interpretation of research data). Principles of informed decision-making for designing preventive measures and implementing regime measures in the area of ​​nutrition and exercise.
  • 11. Personal development of a worker focused on prevention in the area of ​​exercise and nutrition (diagnosis of health behavior and addiction behavior as a source of personal awareness of one's own lifestyles, development of skills for desirable forms of one's own health behavior and addiction prevention), importance of continuous education in the field. First aid in cases of acute intoxication with addictive substances.

Assessment methods
- participation in seminars is mandatory, 2 absences are allowed with the condition of an excuse from IS MU;
- written essay – self-reflection including the identification and diagnosis of one's current lifestyle in the area of ​​diet, sleep and exercise, including the proposal of a specific set of measures leading to the improvement of the current state, including the proposal of the procedure and schedule for the implementation of the proposed measures (point evaluation);
- written exam - test (form of open and closed questions) - graded A-F.
The condition for passing the course is the submission of a self-reflection (see above) in the range of min. 3NS and success in the written test
