Kinesiology, Algesiology and derived Techniques of Diagnostics and Therapy 2 - Course Enrolment Limitations
- The course is only offered to the students of the study fields the course is directly associated with.
- fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
- Physiotherapy (programme FSpS, B-F)
- Physiotherapy (programme FSpS, C-FYZ)
- Abstract
- The subject is based on previous study of Kinesiology, Algesiology and derived Techniques of Diagnostics and Therapy 2 and further focuses on upper extremities. The main aim is to apprehend local kinesiology relations at the level of upper limb as well as global relations between trunk kinesiology and lower/upper limbs. Acquired knowledge is applied to understand underlying principles of examination and treatment techniques in the field of physiotherapy. The subject deals in detail with passive and active factors of stability of upper extremity motor segments. It gives causal definition of functional as well as structural physiology and pathology.
- Learning outcomes
- Successful completion of the subject guarantees student's ability to:
- understand kinesiology relations within trunk region.
- understand principles of special examination and therapy techniques.
- diagnose pathology, select appropriate treatment modality, execute treatment within subject extent.
- students will also be able to educate patients incl. instructions on self-therapy.
- the study of this subject prepares students to clinical activities with patients. - Key topics
Lectures:
01. Shoulder Girdle - anatomy, function, ranges of motion, kinesiology of the true joints of the shoulder girdle, kinesiology of the functional articulations of the shoulder girdle, soft tissues and their function, basic examination of the shoulder girdle, most common disorders and injuries.
02. Elbow and Forearm - anatomy, function, ranges of motion, joint kinesiology, soft tissues, basic examination of the elbow joint and forearm, most common disorders and injuries.
03. Wrist and Hand - anatomy, function, ranges of motion, joint kinesiology, soft tissues, basic examination of the wrist, most common disorders, and injuries.
04. Upper Limb - coordination of individual segments, open vs. closed kinetic chain, etc.
The practical exercises focus on applying the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures listed below to the upper limb, building upon the kinesiology and functional and structural pathology covered in the lectures.
1. Evaluation of joint mobility: active and passive range of motion, joint play, and capsular patterns. Functional and structural pathologies. Joint therapy: indications, contraindications, and principles of mobilization, manipulation, traction, centration, and approximation.
2. Soft tissues: physiological and pathological barriers; diagnostics and therapy of the skin, subcutaneous tissue, fascia, and periosteal points.
3. Functional anatomy of the muscles of the axial apparatus: muscle tone, trophism, muscle strength, and movement patterns. Functional pathology and trigger points: diagnostics and therapy, post-isometric relaxation, and reciprocal inhibition.
04. Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for common conditions: Clinical correlates of axial apparatus and chaining of functional pathologies.

- Approaches, practices, and methods used in teaching
- Students will be exposed to the subject in a form of a lecture that will be followed by practical seminar. These seminars focus on manual techniques of examination and therapy. Students are organized in small groups. Each particular technique is first demonstrated by experienced tutors. Practical training is on peer to peer basis under close supervision of tutors and correction of precise technique.
- Method of verifying learning outcomes and course completion requirements
Course Completion
To be eligible to take the final examination, students must meet the following requirements:
· Attendance: 100% attendance in classes; in accordance with the Study and Examination Regulations, one absence is permitted.
· Continuous assessment tests: a minimum of 70% of the total available points must be achieved in each continuous assessment test. If this requirement is not met, the student may take a comprehensive make-up test covering the content of the entire semester (one attempt); a minimum of 70% of the total available points must be achieved to pass the test.
· Case studies: preparation and presentation of assigned case studies.
· Final Examination
The final examination is conducted before a committee of at least two members and consists of theoretical and practical components. The final grade is awarded on the A–F scale. The practical component accounts for 60% of the final grade, while the theoretical component accounts for 40%. To successfully complete the course, students must pass both components of the final examination.- Language of instruction
