Course objectives
The course builds on Kinesiology, Algesiology and Derived Techniques of Diagnosis and Therapy 4 and further focuses on trunk issues. The aim is to understand the kinesiological relationships at both the local level of the trunk and its importance to the physiological loading of the limbs and to apply this knowledge to specific diagnostic and therapeutic techniques within the field of physiotherapy. The course examines in detail the factors of passive and active stability of the trunk motion segments and provides causal explanations of functional and structural pathology.
Learning outcomes
Successful completion of the subject guarantees student's ability to:
- understand kinesiology relations within upper extremities.
- understand principles of special examination and therapy techniques.
- diagnose pathology, select appropriate treatment modality, execute treatment within subject extent.
- students will also be able to educate patients incl. instructions on self-therapy.
- the study of this subject prepares students to clinical activities with patients.
Syllabus
  • 01. Kinesiology of the axial system - motion segment, components of the axial system, passive and active stability of the segment and sector.
  • 02. Kinesiology of the individual sectors of the axial system (upper cervical sector, lower cervical sector, upper thoracic sector, lower thoracic sector, upper lumbar sector, lower lumbar sector) - functional significance, passive and active stability of individual movement segments, clinical aspects, functional and structural pathology of individual areas.
  • 03. Kinesiology of the chest and abdominal wall including respiration - clinical significance, clinical aspects, functional and structural pathology of this area.
  • 04. Kinesiology of basic postural mechanisms and dynamic movement stereotypes at the level of the whole motor system.
  • Practical exercises:
  • 01. Aspection and palpation diagnostics of the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Treatment of skin barriers in the framework of segmental reflexology, including viscerocutaneous reflexology.
  • 02. Diagnosis and therapy of fascia, including its importance in the chain of functional pathology.
  • 03. Aspectional and palpation diagnosis of muscle tone, strength and trophicity. Special attention is paid to the muscle test according to V. Janda and muscle topography. Manual therapy of individual muscles including proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation/inhibition techniques.
  • 04. Diagnosis and therapy of periosteal points.
  • 05. Joint diagnostics - active and passive ranges of motion, joint patterns, joint play. Joint therapy - mobilization and stabilization (centering) techniques, orthotics, taping.
  • 06. Application of the above diagnostic and therapeutic techniques to the head and cervical spine, thoracic and thoracic spine, abdomen and lumbar spine, sacral spine and pelvic floor with emphasis on key areas.

Teaching methods
Students will be exposed to the subject in a form of a lecture that will be followed by practical seminar. These seminars focus on manual techniques of examination and therapy. Students are organized in small groups. Each particular technique is first demonstrated by experienced tutors. Practical training is on peer to peer basis under close supervision of tutors and correction of precise technique.
Assessment methods
100% presence at practical seminars, 70% mark acquisition from through-term tasks, 70% mark acquisition from through-term written tests and practical exams. Final written exam (minimum of 70% successful rate) and practical exam in front of the examination board of 3 examiners. The student is not qualified for final exam in case of not fulfilling the percentage of through-term tasks, through-term written tests and practical exams. Final written test and final practical exam contributes to 50 and 50% of final evaluation respectively (A-F).
