- Course objectives
The aim of the study trip is to introduce students to a selected topic (in 2026 it will be the Just Transformation of the Karlovy Vary Region), where they will meet local stakeholders, representatives of organizations active in the region, and local people. Thanks to the opportunity to spend several days here, to get to know the region affected by coal mining from multiple angles and its specifics, students are offered the opportunity to understand the local context well. Students also collect relevant contacts. Thanks to the knowledge, data, and contacts collected, students will process a text related to their chosen aspect of the Just Transformation of the Karlovy Vary Region. You can choose from standard news and journalistic genres.
The course includes an organizational meeting, a lecture on the Just Transformations program, and a workshop on the appropriate approach to social issues that we will encounter during the trip. Students will be provided with materials to study before the trip to gain the necessary overview not only of the ongoing transformation of the smallest Czech region. The course can be combined with the course Journalism Focused on Climate Change and only one longer text can be processed. The course is intended for beginning journalists who have already completed the course ZURb1106 News and ZURb1107 Journalism or ENSb1281 Environmental Journalism. The course is organized in cooperation with the Heinrich Böll Stiftung Prague, whose long-term goal is to raise awareness of the impacts and solutions of climate change.
