Course objectives
The course aims at familiarising students with the development of Czech journalism from its beginnings at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries to the mid-20th century. The course focuses on the issues of newspaper leaflet production in the 16th and 17th centuries, the beginnings of the periodical press in the 18th century, newspaper and magazine production in the era of the National Revival, and the emergence of modern political journalism in 1848 – 1849. Within the context of modern history, the course focuses on the issues of the first Czech political dailies appearing the in the 1860s (Čas, Hlas, or Národní listy), “Old Czech” and “Young Czech” press, political party press emerging in the course of political differentiation of Czech society at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the period of the World War I, the character and structure of media in the First Republic, and party and party-independent press between 1918 – 1938.
