Course objectives
A subject Modern European political history introduces students of European studies with issue of modern political developments in European countries. Subject covers the period 1789-1989. At the beginning of the course students will acquire basic knowledge about the specific development and geopolitical breakdown in Europe. The primary objective of the course, however, is to acquaint students with more general processes, which had form the modern mass democratic policy in this time-period. To the extent necessary for understanding the development of a specific European macroregions the interpretation is completed of the social and social-economic aspects. At the end of the course, student will be able to define processes forming modern and contemporary European politics and society. Student will be able to name key information concerning proceeding of European countries’ history in the 20th century. Student will be able to interpret contemporary European politics in its historical dimension.

  • 1) EUROPE: The concept of Europe, its establishment and development of conceptualizing the contemporary history of Europe
  • 2) MODERNITY: demographic, social, economic and political trends in modern Europe
  • 3) REVOLUTION: Europe and the revolution in years 1789 - 1848/1849
  • 4) NATIONALISM: The concept of nation, the ideology of nationalism and the emergence of a difference in the development of modern European nations
  • 5) DEMOCRACY: The path to liberal constitutionalism, the rule of law and modern mass democratic competitive politics
  • 6) CRISIS: Impact of the First World War to the European society, the political problems of democracy in the interwar Europe
  • 7) TOTALITARIANISM: communism, fascism and nazism
  • 8) DISINTEGRATION: The Second World War and the division of Europe by "Iron Curtain"
  • 9) RENEWAL: Western Europe in the 1940s - 1960s
  • 10) A POSTMODERN?: Western Europe in the 1970s - 1990s
  • 11) SOCIALISM: Countries of Soviet bloc in Europe in the 1940s - 1970s

Teaching methods
The course consists of lectures. Part of the workload is as well writing of term paper (circa 15 pages long) aiming at interpretation of selected problem issue of modern European history.
Assessment methods
The course is concluded with a written exam. The overall assessment is composed of the exam result (80 points) and seminar paper (20 points). At least 60 points is needed for successful assessment.
