Course objectives
The aim of the course is to enhance students' English language skills, particularly speaking and listening though both writing and reading will be substantially present, too. Throughout the course, students will learn and practice a bank of academic and field-specific vocabulary. The course aims at being very practical. While the syllabus covers topics from both English for Human Resources and English for Social Policy and Social Work, the proportion of the two variants will be partly decided on by students in the first week of the course.
Syllabus
  • THE HUMAN RESOURCES PART:
  • Recruitment – assessing CVs, conducting job interviews, organising assessment centres
  • Leading meetings – chairing skills, managing meetings with employees
  • Relationship-building – working with first impressions, being an effective networker
  • Negotiating deals – negotiating styles, bargaining
  • Communicating successfully – small talk; initiating, keeping up and ending a conversation
  • Making calls – solving problems on the phone, dealing with chatterers and angry employees
  • Emailing – writing an effective email, writing concisely
  • THE SOCIAL POLICY AND SOCIAL WORK PART:
  • Being a social worker – case studies
