The course focuses on the rise of the daily press in the last third of the 18th century and in the 19th century, on the process of differentiating the press into elite and mass press, as well as the technological and organisational development, the development of press regulation (censorship, licence and privileges systems, and economic barriers), and the fight for freedom of public criticism.
