Course objectives
At the and of the course, students should be able identify the main contemporary therapeutic approaches and key themes and issues, as a substantial part of a scientific scene in psychotherapy. Main objectives can be summarized as follows: to learn the key features of contemporary debates in psychotherapy today. See structure of the course. Further aim can be stated as delineating major differences between serious and scientific psychotherapy and other - fringe, e.g. New Age - approches and so called therapies.
Learning outcomes
Student would be able to identify and in sofisticated way present and discuss the main movements and changes in contemporary psychotherapy (at scientific and political level), understand it, and summarize the key debates in current psychotherapy.
Syllabus
  • The book Contemporary Psychotherapy (Prague, 2010). Main debates in contemporary psychotherapy. List of psychotherapies. Science and non-science.
  • 2. Key issues in discussions among psychotherapists.
  • 3. Contemporary scene in USA, in Europe and in Czech Republic.
  • 4. Delphi method (John Norcross - 1982, 1992, 2002): conclusions and consequences.
  • 5. Psychotherapy and counselling.
  • 6. Empirically supported therapies - and / or - "Tailored" (costumized) approches
  • 7. The personality of psychotherapist. Trainings, personal self-care and developments. Key features of mastery in psychotherapy.
  • 8. Psychodynamic tradition in psychotherapy. Conteporary psychoanalysis.
  • 9. Language(s) of psychotherapy. Openess in psychotherapeutic schools.
  • 10. Eclecticism. Technical eclecticism. Lazarus, Marmor, Norcross, Beutler, Garfield. The clash of paradigm. Louis Castonguay a Marv Goldfried.
  • 11. Research in psychotherapy. The possible designes in research of outcome and process in therapy.
  • 12. Key figures, institutes, journals, books.
  • 13. „Fringe approaches“ in psychotherapy.
