Course objectives
At the and of the course, students should be able identify the main therapeutic factors, both common and specific, as a substantial part of a treatment in psychotherapy. Main objectives can be summarized as follows: to learn the history of development within psychotherapy as a field until the end of 20th century; to delineate the main differences between psychoanalysis, cognitive behavioral therapy, humanistic - existential approaches and systemic / family approaches; to learn the contributions of some dozens representative figures of psychotherapy in the course of the past century.
Learning outcomes
Student would be able to give a sofisticated historical overview of psychotherapy during the course of last century. Student knows very well the main modalities in psychotherapy and knows all basic curative factors in treatment. He/she is able to delineate psychotherapy and allied callings.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction: Therapeutic factors, that works. What does the change in psychotherapy? Theory of the common and specific factors.
  • 2. Psychotherapy process and the theory of precontemplation, contemplation, action and maintenance.
  • 3. The main aim of therapist in the diverse approaches. The differences between explanation and mastery training.
  • 4. Self-care of the psychotherapists. Supervision. Training and further education. Etics and related issues. Literature, journals.
  • 5. The main schools in psychotherapy in the course of 20th centrury. The basic concepts. Similarities and differences.
  • 6. Psychoanalysis.
  • 7. The selected cirriculums of some of the representative, or significant figures, e.g. Ellis, Laing, May, Wolpe, Marmor, Yalom.
  • 8. Future of the psychotherapy. Deplph method. Psychotherapy in the 2010.
  • 9.Approachment and integration of some approaches. Integrative and eclectic psychotherapy. Sola Garfield, Johna Norcross.
  • 10. Psychotherapy research of the outcomes and process. History of the research. Eysenck, Temple study. Smith and Glass (1977). NIMH (Elkin), Grawe, Timuĺák.
  • 11. Psychotherapy during the years of 1955-1970 in USA. The period of the new developments.
  • 12. Systems of psychotherapy according to Norcross and Prochaska.
