To be admitted to the German for Lawyers exam, the students are required to have completed a 2 semester course.

Course objectives
At the end of the course students will be able to define key concepts and explain German system of law, especially in the following areas (e.g. law of obligation, law of contract, family law, law of succession). They will be able to discuss German system of law. They will understand the gist of conversations on legal topics.

  • Topics for reading comprehension, assisted discussion and terminology 1. Introduction: programme of the course, literature 2. Civil law - obligations 3. Civil law - types of contracts 4. Civil law - compensation of damage, unlawful conduct 5. Civil law - law of property 6. Family law - marriage 7. Family law - divorce requirements according 8. Law of succession -legal heirs and legal order of succession 9. Teaching methods
Interactive language seminar, analysis of legal texts, reading comprehension, listening comprehension, independent speaking
Assessment methods
The course is taught in the form of seminars. It is ended by a credit awarded on the basis of an active participation in class discussions, 90% attendance, continuous assessment and final test. At the end of the seminar students are required to write a memorandum to set topic.
