The prerequisite for German for Lawyers is the language competence at the intermediate level.

Course objectives
Students will be able to discuss specific fields of law (e.g. Commercial law, Criminal law, Procedural law) at the level of B2 – C1 (CEFR). At the end of the course students will be able to write a well structured CV and job application in German. They will understand the gist of conversations on legal topics (listening level B2-C1).

Syllabus
  • Topics for reading comprehension, assisted discussion and terminology 1. Introduction: programme of the course, literature, formal letter 2. Job application - application discussion, letter of application 3. Commercial law - business person, agent, commercial undertaking 4. Company law - partnership, stock corporation 5. Criminal law - basic principles 6. Criminal law - elements of a criminal offence, consequences of a crime 7. Procedural law - particular type of court, jurisdiction 8. Procedural law - a court, legal proceedings, the system of courts in Germany 9. Procedural law - civil proceedings 10. Procedural law - criminal proceedings 11. Juvenile criminal law - criminal liability of children and juveniles, consequences of criminal acts of juveniles 12. Final test (vocabulary, grammar, knowledge)

Teaching methods
Interactive language seminar, analysis of legal texts, reading comprehension, listening comprehension, independent speaking
Assessment methods
The course is taught in the form of seminars. It is ended by a credit awarded on the basis of an active participation in class discussions, 100% attendance and a final credit test (vocabulary, grammar, knowledge). The required success rate of tests is 70%. Systematic work with e-learning programme will be rewarded by a bonus of 1 up to 3 points.
