Course objectives
The main objectives of the course are to become oriented in the environment of the chemical laboratory, to experimentally verify some knowledge discussed during the theoretical teaching of Medical Chemistry, and to teach students how to process measurement results into protocols, evaluate them and draw conclusions.
Learning outcomes
Students
- will be familiar with regulations for safe handling, use, and disposal of chemicals;
- will be able to handle with basal laboratory equipment;
- will be able to prepare a solution of the given concentration;
- measure the pH of solutions, titrate
- prepare a buffer and determine its capacity
- perform basic qualitative analysis - precipitation, colour reactions
Syllabus
  • Health and safety at work in the laboratory.
  • Preparation of solutions of  given concentration.
  • Measurement of pH of solutions. Titration of weak and strong acids.
  • Preparation of buffers and determination of buffering capacity.
  • Reactions of selected ions.
  • Oxidation of alcohols, reducing properties of carbohydrates.
  • Colour reactions of amino acids, determination of the isoelectric point of proteins, and denaturation of proteins.
