- Abstract
- The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the theory of first aid, to establish a unified framework for responding to the most common traumatic and non-traumatic conditions, and to develop the ability to apply safe and effective procedures when providing first aid in various settings. The lecture block prepares students for the practical training sessions, which are thematically interconnected.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
Recognize life-threatening conditions and determine the appropriate first aid procedure.
Explain the legal framework and ethical aspects of providing first aid.
Analyze the situation at the scene and describe a safe approach to the injured person.
Apply correct communication principles when speaking with the emergency dispatcher and when interacting with injured persons. Demonstrate the principles of layperson first aid for the most common traumatic and non-traumatic conditions. Evaluate the possibilities and limitations of advanced aids (AED, bag-valve mask, oxygen) when used by a trained lay responder. Explain the concept of the Integrated Rescue System and understand the role of the “first responder” in the Czech Republic. Reflect on the specifics of first aid in children, pregnant women, and selected special conditions (intoxications, extreme environments, mass casualty incidents). Propose preventive measures and explain their importance for different target groups. - Key topics
- 1. Introduction to the course and non-traumatic conditions Terminology, legal framework, and ethics of first aid. Scene orientation, technical first aid in traffic accidents. Car first aid kit, “Záchranka” application. Communication with the dispatcher and with participants at the scene. Non-traumatic conditions: ACS, dyspnea, allergy/anaphylaxis, stroke, epilepsy, diabetes, infections, altered consciousness. 2. Traumatic conditions Haemorrhage and its management (bandages, tourniquet, hemostatics). Fractures and immobilisation, amputations. Head, limb, chest, pelvis, spine, eye, oral cavity, and nasal injuries. Bandaging techniques and minor injuries. Thermal injuries (burns, frostbite, electric shock, lightning strike). Inhalation trauma. 3. Shock states and resuscitation Clinical manifestations of shock, first aid principles. BLS – chain of survival, differences between layperson vs. trained responder. AED, specifics in drowning and asphyxia. Role of the Integrated Rescue System, concept of the first responder. Advanced aids in the hands of trained lay responders. 4. Acute conditions in paediatrics and obstetrics Common acute conditions in children (laryngitis, epiglottitis, febrile seizures, apnea, diarrheal diseases). Acute conditions in pregnant women (preeclampsia, haemorrhage, altered consciousness). Out-of-hospital delivery, newborn adaptation and care. 5. Advanced and specific conditions Psychological first aid. Intoxications (CO, alcohol, opioids, drugs). Extreme medicine (tropical, mountain, diving). Mass casualty incidents from the perspective of the civilian population. End of life and limits of first aid. Prevention as the most effective form of first aid.
