Course objectives
Data in healthcare are recorded and transmitted in a standardized form using terminology and classification systems and value sets. For example the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is a universal tool and a respected standard for coding of patient's conditions. The List of Healthcare Procedures is similarly used in the Czech Republic to code healthcare services provided. However, there are other international or national classification systems and terminologies. The importance of those systems is increasing with efforts to standardize and digitize the health record (Electronic Health Record, EHR, Electronic Health, eHealth).

The aim of the course „Classifications and coding in healthcare“ is to provide students with information about systems actually in use, international standards and current development in this field. Students will learn about the family of international classifications of the World Health Organization (WHO FIC), their current use in the Czech Republic and related methodologies. Furthermore, they will be informed about systems in development, systems in implementation and systems used in other countries.
Learning outcomes
Absolvent of the course:
- is familiar with the terminology and classification systems in health care and their purposes and applications;
- is familiar with the major systems used in the Czech Republic and other major systems and standards provided by the World Health Organization and other organizations;
- knows the main methodologies and rules for the use of the International Classification of Diseases and the List of Healthcare Procedures in coding practice, knows the processes for changing these rules and to can identify appropriate online tools and resources;
- understands the current state of use of information systems and data collection systems in healthcare.

Assessment methods
CREDIT REQUIREMENTS:
1. 100% participation in seminars during the semester.
2. Absence will be excused only for medical reasons. The student must provide appropriate documentation or medical certificate.
Students must be aware that even in the case of excused absences (health reasons) at least 80% attendance is required to obtain credit. If the student has more than 20% excused or unexcused absence, they will have to repeat the course in the following semester or academic year.
3. Completion of assigned tasks.
In case of an unexcused absence, the student will be required to elaborate a seminar paper in the range of 1500-2000 words and a 5-8 minutes long power point presentation on the given topic. If the seminar paper is rejected due to deficiencies and is not corrected and re-submitted by the student for review, the student will not meet the requirements of the subject and will not get credit (see Policy of Absence and Late Arrivals, Academic Offenses, Plagiarism and Unethical Behavior.
4. Active participation during seminars / lectures.
