Course objectives
The course introduces students to the sociology and social psychology as academic disciplines and ways of thinking at the same time. We will focus on the historical development of this disciplines and the basic sociological and social psychological terms, concepts and theories. Throughnout the course, we will show how the sociological and social psychological theories can be applied in the various fields of human activities such as communication, work, education, family and partnership. We will work with particular examples and various type of materials, beside textbooks and academic papers also with media coverage, statistics, empirical material of both qualitative and quantitative nature. Specifically, we will discuss four main areas:
1. The science of social psychology and sociology
2. The society and the individual
3. Social relationships
4. Social institutions
Learning outcomes
The student will learn:
- Give a basic account of sociological theories and the theories of social psychology
- Critically understand the major methods of research in social psychology and sociology
- Apply the sociological and social psychological concepts theories and research findings to everyday situations
- Acquire an understanding of the importance of the social influences on the individual perception, experience, behavioral patterns and biography
