Course objectives
On successful completion of the course student will obtain the basic knowledge about the field of general toxicology: routes of exposure (intake of chemicals); internal exposure (uptake of chemicals); metabolism; genetic polymorphism and its role in the individual vulnerability; routes of excretion. Biological effects of exposure to xenobiotics, methods of measurements and evaluation;
In the specific part of medical toxicology, student will be able to understand the role of important xenobiotics contaminated the food chains in the exposure, biological effects and prevention.
Syllabus
  • Environmental chemical contaminants - problems, world catastrophes. Intake, uptake in toxicology. Anti-chemical defense systems in the human body. Metabolism of chemicals, the role of microsomal enzymes. Genetic determination of the differences in the metabolism of xenobiotics, the effects on human sussceptibility to chemicals. The methods of experimental studies in toxicology, interpretation of their results for the human exposure. Polychlorinated hydrocarbons: DDT, PCB, PCDD, PCDF: toxicology, control. Heavy metals: Hg, Pb, Cd, As, Cr: toxicology, control. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their nitroso-derivates: toxicology, control. Pesticides, natural pesticides.
