Course objectives
From the course on pharmacology students are expected to obtain: a) from lectures and seminars: a clarification of integration in the field of biomedical subjects such as chemistry, physiology, molecular biology, pathology and pathological physiology enabling them to understand why, what mechanism by, and what conditions on, drugs and their combinations may elicit therapeutic, adverse, and toxic effects. They will acquire an orientation in drug classes according to their main therapeutic indications with an attention paid to common drug-drug interactions, too. Information on drug development process, rules of preclinical and clinical drug testing will also be given. b) from practicals: a training in practical skills in "pharmacological thinking" in cases of need to make a choice of drug, dosing regimen, rout and techniques of administration, and an elimination of adverse interactions with drugs simultaneously given.
Syllabus
  • (1) Introduction to psychopharmacology. Neurotransmiter mechanisms and specific neurotransmiter systems. (2) Antipsychotics, treatment of psychosis, undesirable effects. Drugs for affective (mood) disorders, Ist - III. (IV.)rd generations of antidepressants, anti-manic drugs. (3) Nootropics. Anti-Parkinson pharmacotherapy, (dopaminergic drugs, central anticholinergic drugs). Drugs used in Alzheimer`s disease. Drug addiction, mechanisms, treatment and prevention. Nicotin, side effects, toxicity, clinical problems. Therapy and prevention of nicotinism. (4) Anti-infective agents. Basic strategies of antimicrobial therapy, uses in pediatrics, during pregnancy and lactation, in patients with organ disorders. (5) Drugs affecting coagulation, fibrinolysis, and platelet aggregation (6) Antihypertensives. Diuretics, antiadrenergics, vasodilatators, combinative pharmacotherapy. (7) Pharmacotherapy of heart failure. Inotropic drugs, digitalis, amrinone, dobutamine - pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, adverse effects, interactions, management of overdosage. Present standard of pharmacotherapy in patients with heart failure (8) Pharmacotherapy of cardiac arrythmias. I.A - affecting membrane functions, quinidine-like effects; I.B - affecting mebrane functions with anesthetic effects; I.C - lorcainide, flecainide, propafenone; II. - beta-blockers; III. - increasing APD; IV. - calcium channel antagonists (9) Anti-anginal agents (nitrites, beta-adrenergic blockers, calcium entry blockers). Lipid lowering agents (bile acid ion-exchange resins, cholesterol synthesis inhibitors, fibric acid derivates, nicotinic acid, others).

During the studying the students have to prove active knowledge of pharmacology acquired. The students have to pass the final prescription test and multiple-choice test
