Prerequisites
CJVAT01 English - entrance test
Students must take a diagnostic test at the beginning of the first year (CJVAT01 Angličtina - vstupní test). If they fail this test, they are advised to complete successfully two online English courses “CJVAJ_KI Angličtina pro studenty kombinované formy studia I” and “CJVAJ_KII Angličtina pro studenty kombinované formy studia II” during the first year of their studies. This arrangement seeks to give students the best opportunity to prepare for the BLKAN0321 course, which they attend within their second year of study.

Course objectives
The course objective is to develop students' receptive (reading, listening) and productive (speaking, writing) English language skills and to enhance their grammar knowledge at level B2. The course also seeks to develop in students the full mastery of specialized discipline-specific vocabulary.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to describe and explain terms related to common laboratory work, name laboratory equipment and define its functions, describe individual steps of laboratory procedures, apply professional language in communication with doctors and colleagues, interpret laboratory reports as well as use grammatical structures typical of medical language.
Syllabus
  • MEDICAL ENGLISH. Syllabus.
  • SESSION 1: UNIT 1: Spectrophotometer 1 + UNIT 2: Spectrophotometer 2. Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises.
  • SESSION 2: UNIT 3: Routine chemistry analysers + UNIT 4: Electrophoresis. Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises.
  • SESSION 3: UNIT 5: Osmometry + UNIT 6: Chromatography. Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises.
  • SESSION 4: UNIT 7: Atomic absorption spectrometry + UNIT 8: Acid base and blood gas analyser. Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises.
  • SESSION 5: CREDIT TEST.

Assessment methods
Attendance is compulsory. One unexcused absence is tolerated. Absences beyond this quota are excused provided a letter of excuse is handed in at the Office for Studies which then officially displays it in the IS. Assessment is based on the attendance and results of the credit test (minimum score 60%).
