Course objectives
At the end of the collection of lectures a student will be able to apply basic laws of the geometrical and wave optic on eye like on multi-lens centered optical system, which can be affected by many different refractive aberrations (myopia, hypermetropia, presbyopia, astigmatism, anisometropia, aniseikonia, aphakia). The student analyzes single refractive errors, compares different correction lenses and suggests their technical parameters.
Syllabus
  • Fundamental laws of geometrical optics. The Fermat principle, law of reflection and refraction at an interface of optical media, Reusch’s geometric construction.
  • Gaussian and Newtonian form of the thin-lens formula, convention in geometric-optical variables description, general and paraxial ray, calculation of spherical aberration of a thin lens.
  • Imaging by the system of two centred optical surface in paraxial space. Principal points and planes of an optical system, transversal, longitudinal (axial) and angular magnification, the Helmholtz-Lagrange law.
  • Gullstrand’s equation. Characteristic magnification of the lens, positions of the principal planes from the apices of spherical surfaces in dependence on their optical power.
  • Gullstrand’s schematic eye. Corneal and lenticular imaging system of the eye.
  • The overall optical system of Gullstrand’s schematic eye – calculation.
  • Geometric-optical tabular calculation of Gullstrand’s schematic eye in the paraxial space as a multi-element optical system.
  • Eye anatomy. Photopic and scotopic vision, size of images on the eye retina, the maximum resolving power of the eye.
  • Concept of optotypes. Calculation of basic parameters, Czech and international optotype, visus, visual acuity angular and coincidence, general demands on optotypes.
  • Emetropic, myopic a hypermetropic eye. Distant (far) point, near point, axial refraction, accommodation interval, amplitude of accommodation, vergence, spherical ametropia.
  • Myopic eye. Axial and refractive myopia, etiology of myopia, correction of myopia, conversion of apical refractive power of a spectacle lens in dependence on its position from the cornea, image size on the retina – examples.
  • Hypermetropic (hyperopic) eye. Axial and refractive hypermetropia, optically-anatomic symptoms of hypermetropia, correction of hypermetropia, conversion of apical refractive power, image size on the retina – examples.
  • Aphakic eye. Correction of aphakia by a spectacle lens, correction of aphakia by a contact lens, intraocular lens.
  • Eye length with respect to the character of axial refraction. Axial and refractive ametropia, aniseikonia in dependence on the character of axial refraction.
  • Revision – written exam, assessment.
