Course objectives
The subject Intensive care, nursing care in paediatrics, integrates knowledge from basic scientific disciplines, natural, social and behavioral sciences and builds on knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and nursing care. It is conceived as theoretical-practical, with the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, by practicing selected nursing interventions used in paediatrics and intensive care. The course teaches students to understand the peculiarities of childhood, the specifics of communication, acquaints them with the care of a healthy and sick child, focuses on physiological and pathological newborn, psychomotor development, childhood diseases, injuries and cardiopulmonary resuscitation in children. Furthermore, the course introduces medical-preventive and nursing care in paediatrics and intensive care in paediatrics.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
define a physiological and pathological newborn;
describe intensive nursing care in pathological newborn;
divide childhood and understand the peculiarities of childhood;
characterize psychomotor development of a child in individual developmental periods;
communicate with a child of all ages;
prepare the child for diagnostic examination;
measure and evaluate vital signs;
define acute conditions in a child;
describe injuries and know preventive measures of injuries;
know the child's CPR algorithms;
to define medical-preventive and nursing care of a child;
define intensive care.

  • Orientation in medical and nursing documentation.
  • Training of selected nursing interventions (manipulation with a child, measurement of vital functions, provision of peripheral venous cannula, introduction of catheters and probes, pharmacological peculiarities).
  • Excursion to University Hospital Brno, Intensive Pediatric Care Unit.
