Course objectives
Individual Nursing Practice II is a practical course that builds on previous nursing practice and integrates knowledge of nursing theory and practice, basic science disciplines, natural, social and behavioral sciences and provides the acquisition, consolidation and deepening of nursing knowledge and skills. in the field of surgery and intensive care. The course takes the form of direct and indirect patient care, in accordance with the applicable legislation, and enables students to apply the theoretical knowledge and practical skills acquired by studying theoretical-practical disciplines in the conditions of a health service provider. The content of the course is the practical activity of students in the form of clinical internships within the inpatient and outpatient surgical workplaces and intensive care units. The aim of the internships is the ability to apply the nursing process to patients with surgical disease and to consolidate theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field of surgery and intensive care, including specific nursing habits. The practice takes the form of internships under the guidance of mentors, in continuous operation, in inpatient and outpatient departments. It is realized in university hospitals in Brno or with contractual providers of health services (with a framework contract for the practice of students of the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University). The completed internships, activities, performances and other activities within the nursing practice are recorded in the Logbook of Nursing Practice (Logbook).
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
be familiar with the operation of the health service provider's facilities;
obey the rules of occupational health and safety and fire protection;
respect the principles of safety of care;
observe the principles of barrier nursing care;
to manage the demands of continuous operation;
use and maintain medical and nursing documentation;
understand the nursing and surgical terminology;
to perform nursing activities and procedures according to established criteria and in accordance with the latest scientific knowledge (Evidence Based Nursing);
apply preoperative and postoperative care procedures;
take care of the wound and drainage system, including the evaluation of wounds and drainages;
nursing a patient with a derivative and nourishing stoma;
recognize complications of surgical diseases;
to implement methods of individual and group health education;
participate in comprehensive care in cooperation with other healthcare professionals;
strengthen communication skills;
apply the nursing process in clinical practice to patients hospitalized in a standard inpatient ward or intensive care unit: traumatology, orthopedics, urology, neurosurgery, burns and plastic surgery, abdominal, vascular and thoracic surgery (depending on the chosen clinic placement).

  • Care for derivative stoma.
  • Care for nutritional stoma.
  • Nutritional support.
  • Nursing care in traumatology, orthopedics, urology, neurosurgery, burns and plastic surgery, abdominal surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, cardiac surgery (according to the chosen clinic placement): nursing care in the standard ward and in intensive care units.
