Course objectives
The course course focuses on selected chapters from French literature of the 19th and 20 century influenced by Christianity. At the end of this course the student will be able: to learn the French literature of this period; to define the main characteristics of different literary styles and to explain how the influence of Christianity; to demonstrate theory of concrete examples from texts.
Learning outcomes
After this course the student is able to apply acquired knowledge in writing of seminar and undergraduate works.

  • I. Introduction to the influence of Christianity on literature, historical overview and context (Maritain) II. Romantism (Chateaubriand, Hugo) III. Difficult search for identity during the 19th century (Barbey d’Aurevilly) IV. Conversion to Christianity of intellectuals (Claudel, Huysmans, Péguy) V. Catholic novel in the first half of the 20th century (Mauriac, Bernanos, Green) VI. Poetry and Mysticism (Noel, Jammes, Emmanuel) VII. The spiritual trends in the literature turn of the 20th and 21 century (Germain, Bobin, Schmitt)
