Course objectives
The course is focused on gaining basic knowledge in the field of literary theory with regards to the matters of children’s and youth literature. After successfully completing the course, the student gains basic knowledge in the field of literary theory necessary for their own reception and interpretation of the youth literature.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, students will be able to:
- identify and characterize literary kinds and genres;
- analyze composition devices of a literary work;
- analyze languages devices of a literary work;
- create an analysis of a literary work based on their theoretical knowledge, practically interpret both prose and poetry;
- define the specifics of children’s and youth literature and make conclusions for their teaching practice.

Youth literature, its specifics and genres. 6. Composition devices of literary works. 7. Literary character, narrator; author and recipient. 8. Prosody. 9. Linguistic devices of literary works. 10. Tropes. 11. Syntactic devices of literary works. 12. Affective uses of language.

Teaching methods
Type of course: lecture and seminar. During sessions, the students are familiarized with the professional terminology and with the process of literary communication (with regards to the specifics of children’s and youth literature). The most important learning methods in seminar are the analysis and interpretation of a literary text.
Assessment methods
Course requirements: examination. The written examination tests the essentials of the terminology of literary science and interpretational analysis of poetry and prose for children and young adults. In the full-time form of study, active participation in seminars is a condition for admission to the examination.

Teacher's information
Course completion requirements for students going on placement (full-time study): submission of a seminar paper focused on the interpretative analysis of a poetic text. In the case of online teaching, the final test is written online (through ROPOTs in IS).
