Course objectives
The course focuses on the often neglected (American) popular literature, explaining its 20th century roots, values and the appeal for the contemporary reader. In classes, students read, discuss and question selected materials, employing both the traditional and contemporary points of view.
The appropriation of American popular literature by Czech culture is commented on as well.
Students are encoureged to use selected texts in their work at secondary schools.
The course serves as an opening for the AJ3DC_POST Nové literatury.

  • 1. Introduction to the course; American popular literature within and after the literary canon.
  • 2. American oral literature.
  • Reader: tall tale, urban legend, folk song.
  • 3. Western novels.
  • Reader: Jack Schaefer, Larry McMurtry, Gretel Ehrlich.
  • 4. Detective stories of the hard-boiled school.
  • Reader: James Lee Burke, Walter Mosley, Sue Grafton.
  • 5.Fantasy fiction.
  • Reader: Ursula LeGuin, Susanne Collins, Rebecca Stead.
  • 6. Reading for women/girls.
  • Reader: Danielle Steel, Harlequin novel example, chicklit novel example.
