Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able:
1. To understand problems of characteristics of corpuses, their annotations, and markings.
2. To use Czech National Corpus;
3. To look up chosen language phenomena in corpuses of written Czech - SYN2000 a SYN2005, SYN 2006PUB, SYN2009PUB, SYN2010, SYN20013PUB as well as in corpuses of spoken Czech, e.g. ORAL 2008, ORAL2013;
4. To Classify founded language phenomena using tolls of Czech Natonal Corpus and to elaborated them.

  • 1. Origin of corpus linguistics. Language corpuses and how to use them.
  • 2. Types of corpuses, characteristics of corpuses. Corpus managers.
  • 3. Annotated corpuses, markings. Basic therminology: lemma, word, lc, tag;
  • 4. Orthographical variants in Czech National Corpus;
  • 5. Morphological variants in Czech National Corpus;
  • 6. Word-forming variants in Czech National Corpus;
  • 7. Phraseology in Czech National Corpus;
  • 8. Frequency. Frequency and evaluation of linguistic data.

Teaching methods
A seminar - problem method, controlled discussion on the professional issues of the course. Working with Czech National Corpus. Analysis of founded language phenomena.
Assessment methods
The subject is ended by a credit test. Compulsory attendance. The students submit written papers of searched linguitic phenomena elaborated during tuitions and by individual work. There are evaluated: factually correctness and appropriate using professional style. Detailed requirements are available in each term in Study Materials of the course in the Information System MU, the folder Learning Materials.
