Prerequisites
The course requires advanced listening and reading skills in German. During the semester, it is necessary to read and understand texts drawn from the scientific literature on German linguistics.

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the analysis of complex word forms into smaller parts. In analysing simple cases, the basic principles of a word form analysis are introduced. As we pass on to more challenging cases, we try to investigate the limitations of the word form model.
Learning outcomes
At the end the course, students should be able
- to recognize the makeup of words from smaller parts,
- in the standard cases to analyse complex words into the appropriate constituents,
- to draw conclusions from the internal structure of words concerning their grammatical properties,
- to produce regular forms and to derive complex forms from more simple forms,
- to draw conclusions on the merits and limitation of the model of word structure.
Syllabus
  • 1. Basic components of word structure: root, stem, affixes;
  • 2. Hierarchical ordering of elements within the word form;
  • 3. The concept of “head of a word” and its application to derivational affixes;
  • 4. The delimitation of derivational and inflectional affixes; borderline cases;
  • 5. Analysis of problematic cases (more the one possible segmentation, prefixes and circumfixes, zero morphs vs. implicit derivation);
  • 6. Limits of word structure models: modification of stems.

Teaching methods
The work in class is based on compulsory reading of selected linguistic texts (written summaries may be required during the term), analysis of German language material (partly to be done at home) and the comparison of different grammars and text books of German in oral (short presentations) and written (homework) form.
Assessment methods
The course can be completed either by a “credit“ or by a “colloquium” (cf. Study and Examination Rules, section 18 and 19). In order to acquire a “credit”, students have to hand in the compulsory homework and to regularly attend class (no more than three absences). In order to acquire the “colloquium”, students in addition have to hand in a seminar paper (e.g. comparing the descriptions in different grammars or analyzing the word structure of selected word forms).
