Course objectives
The lecture builds on the morphological knowledge of the language with topics related to the composition of the language. The lecture provides a theoretical interpretation of questions further trained and deepened in the seminar to understand the structure of the French language. The aim of the course is to enable the students to understand the composition of the French sentence, its specifics, the function of the word types in the sentence members and the conformity of the subject with the hypothesis; to further analyze sentences in coordinate and subordinate relationships and to explain the word order in individual types of sentences.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, students will be able to: dominate terminology necessary for syntax analysis of sentences; understand the structure of clauses and sentences based on the relation of syntax and morphology; demonstrate procedures used in syntax analysis; define types of sentences; reproduce sentence membres and word order; analyse typology of discourse.
Syllabus
  • Part of speech (parties du discours) - repetition of terminology, examples. Functions of part of speech: sentence members (membres de la proposition) - terminology and examples. Functions of nouns in various sentence members. Verb functions. Subject and predicate. Subject verb agreement. Types of predicates. Participles and their functions. Types of sentences. French sentence structure. Coordinate sentences, coordination relations. Juxtaposition. Subordinate clauses: subordinate clauses according to their function.
