Course objectives
Development of proper Russian pronunciation on single words and in short texts, introduction to transcription. Special focus is given to accent. Pronunciation, rhythmical elements, pronunciation of before-voiced and after-voiced A, O, transcription of weak and strong sounds, voiced and unvoiced sounds. Reading of short texts. Rhythm and melody.
Learning outcomes
Students master the rules of transcription of Russian words and sentences, can correctly pronounce Russian paired hard and soft consonants, reduce vowels in unstressed syllables, can pronounce Russian unpaired hard and unpaired soft consonants.
Syllabus
  • 1. Russian alphabet and the system of Russian sounds. Division into vowels and consonants. Orthographic letters, letters indicating vowels and consonants. 2. Transcription, its rules. 3. Russian accent. Rhythm. 4. Reduction. Pronunciation of unstressed vowels. 5. Transcription е, ё, ю, я at the beginning of a word, after vowels and after a soft character. 6. Assimilation in sound. Transcription and pronunciation of voiced and unvoiced consonants. 7. Paired hard and soft consonants, their transcription and pronunciation. 8. Transcription and pronunciation of conjunction vowel + е, ё, и, ю, я. 9. Transcription and pronunciation of unpaired hard consonants [ж], [ш], [ц]. 10. Transcription and pronunciation of unpaired soft consonants [чʼ], [j], [шʼ:]. 11. Reading of multi-syllable words, phrases and short sentences. 12. Tactic training, melody.

Student must actively participate in the class, prepare regulary home assignments. Reading and listening russian texts.
