Prerequisites
Basic knowledge from chemistry, mathematics, physics and geography for secondary school.
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is only offered to the students of the study fields the course is directly associated with.
fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
Course objectives
Basic information from mineralogy and petrology will be refer in these lectures. Origin, structura and chemistry of the minerals will be discuss in the first part of lectures. Mineralogical system will be presented in simple form. The relevant information will be provide about classification and origin of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to: - orientation in issues and terminology related to inanimate nature; - to select and document selected natural phenomena and processes on particular samples of rocks and minerals.
Syllabus
  • I. Principles of mineralogy 1. Introduction to the study of minerals and crystals. 2. Origin and growth of crystals. 3. Crystallography - external form (crystal symmetry, symmetry elements, crystal faces, crystallographic axes, Weiss and Miller indices, names and description of crystal forms). 4. Crystallography - crystal structures (principles of crystal structure, translation directions and distances, three-dimensional lattices, unique types of space lattices). 5. Crystal chemistry (bonding forces in crystals, isomorphism and polymorphism). 6. Physical properties of minerals (specific gravity, hardness, cleavage and fracture, tenacity, fusibility, thermal and electric conductivity, electrical properties - piezoelectricity, pyroelectricity, magnetic properties, radioactivity, luminescence). 7. Optical properties of minerals (nature of light, diaphaneity and luster, reflection and refraction, index of refraction, polarized light, polarizing instruments). 8. Minerals: endogenous and exogenous origin. 9. Systematic mineralogy, mineral classification, overview and characteristics of selected minerals. II. Principles of petrography 1. Introduction to the study of rocks. 2. Basic distribution and properties of rocks. 3. Igneous rocks (classification of igneous rocks, igneous magma bodies, magma - nature and sources, magmatic crystallization and differentiation, overview and characteristics of selected igneous rocks). 4. Sedimentary rocks (formation of sedimentary rocks: weathering, transportation, deposition, diagenesis; basis of classification, overview and characteristics of selected types of sedimentary rocks). 5. Metamorphic rocks (metamorphism - nature and categories, contact and regional metamorphism, basis of classification, overview and characteristics of selected types of metamorphic rocks).
