Course objectives
The aim of the course is to make students understand the role of scientific knowledge in the development of pedagogical sciences, to comprehend the specifics of the quantitative and qualitative methodology and to be able to carry out an educational research project.
Syllabus
  • The course introduces students to a scientific way of thinking which is indispensable for a successful design, realization and evaluation of an educational research. It draws upon students elementary knowledge from their master s study. The aim of the course is to make students understand the role of scientific knowledge in the development of pedagogical sciences, to comprehend the specifics of the quantitative and qualitative methodology and to be able to carry out an educational research project. Topics to cover: Science and human knowledge. Model of falsificationism (K. R. Poppera). Holistic conception of science (T. S. Kuhn). Trend of development in social sciences. Interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity in sciences. Scientific research as a way to knowledge and discovery. Nature and kinds of scientific research in pedagogical sciences. Research as a means of scientific work. Kinds of educational research. Methodological standards in educational research. Objectivity, validity a reliability in educational research. Quantitative, qualitative and mixed research design in pedagogical sciences. Project of an educational research, its structure. Quantitative research: defining a research problem, its variables, formulating a work hypothesis, statistic hypothesis, selecting a research sample, choosing research methods and techniques. Qualitative research: knowledge of the researched field, defining a research problem, choosing strategies and methods of research, selecting a research sample, triangulation. An outline of the possible use of methods and techniques of both qualitative and quantitative research. Processing and intertretation of the research results. Structure and writing of a research report.
