Abstract
The course covers British literature from mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. At the end of the course, students will have gained a general insight into the period. Further, they will be able to identify, individually interpret, question,and critically evaluate major works of the period in the cultural, social and historical context.

1. The Golden Age of the novel (the Brontë sisters, Charles Dickens, W.M. Thackeray). 2. Victorian mores and their critique: R.L. Stevenson, Oscar Wilde, Wilkie Collins. 3. Escape from reality: Oscar Wilde, Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear. 4. Decline of the empire: Rudyard Kipling, Joseph Conrad. 5. Naturalism: Tess of the d´Urbervilles. 6. Modernism and its alternatives: Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce.
