- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to make students familiar with basic topics of educational and school management. Students will understand basic theories and terms related to school management and they will orientate in Czech and foreign professional resources to the issue discussed. They will know the main educational legislation and be able to apply it in their practice. They will learn to work with school documents with an analysis of evaluation processes in a selected school or school facility. The students will present results of their analysis both in written form using professional language.

After completing the course, the student:
• defines and applies basic terms of educational and school management,
• works with current legislative and curricular documents and use them in everyday teaching practice,
• characterizes Czech and European education policy and discusses selected topics in the context of current school legislation,
• describes individual elements of classroom, school and education management and recognizes their specifics,
• analyzes the internal and external evaluation documents of the selected school and defines how particular evaluation is reflected in its everyday activities. - Syllabus
- 1. The importance of legislation in the profession of a teacher. Basic concepts and theories. School management, pedagogical management, managerial competence of a teacher. Fundamental legislation + familiarize students with the core acts and sources where they can be found. Organizational instructions for the subject + Information on the portfolio task.
- 2. Pedagogical Management: Legislative competence of teacher and class teacher. Classroom management. New pupil in a class. A teacher and the interdisciplinary overlap of his/her competences. Organization of extracurricular activities.
- 3. Pedagogical Management: Class management strategy - research results, organization of education, forms of power. Organizational forms of teaching. Differentiation of teaching.
- 4. School Management: School organizational structure. School quality assurance and quality management concepts, school self-evaluation and external evaluation, school development. Discussion with representatives of school management = sample documents. Acquainting students with the selection process for the positions of teachers / school managers. Salaries, salary tables.
- 5. School Management: Decentralization, autonomy, "Composing Accounts". School as a learning organization, introducing innovation into schools, managing change process. School councils as a central element of school management.
- 6. School Management. Educational policy of the Czech Republic in the context of the European Union (Lisbon Process, Bologna Declaration, Memorandum on Lifelong Learning). White Book, Strategie 2020. Principles of Czech educational policy (lifelong learning for all, equal educational opportunities, employability, social cohesion and social relevance, internationalization in education).
- 7. School Management - School legislation in the Czech Republic (Education Acts, Education Staff Act). Educational system. Curricular reform. Financing of education, schools in the Czech Republic (in the context of the EU and other countries). Management of development-educational projects at school. Financing of support measures.

- Teaching methods
- The course is taught in seminars with guided group discussions, where, after reading professional literature and reflecting on their pedagogical experience (especially related to their teaching practice), students discuss the specific topics and their current views in schools and education. On the basis of recommended literature, students prepare for the lessons and they also present a particular topic in a smaller group. The course is supported by e-materials about the specific topics and can be found on is.muni.
- Assessment methods
- TActive participation in the course. A written test focused on school management and legislation. Portfolio task: The student will study the CSI Report and the Annual Activity Report of the school, where he / she conducts teaching practice. They choose one area that has been positively evaluated by the CSI and the school, and analyze how the school organizes this area practice, how it is supported and developed.(It can be realized in e.g. faculty schools, where students have their teaching practice in the master programme.). To gain the credit, a test in school management and legislation must be passed (pass mark 70 %) and the portfolio task must be accepted by the teacher. The criteria for assessing the portfolio task are: quality of the professional placement of the selected topic (40 %), quality of analyses and conclusions (40 %), and the formal aspect of its written form(20 %).
