Course objectives
The course is the second of three subsequent courses providing a general overview of the cultural history of Central Europe. The course introduces key phenomena of Central European culture from a comparative perspective, provides general historical context for any further study in the field.
The course focuses on inter-war (such and avantgarde in different media) and post-war cultural phenomenons, especially the relation of art and totalitarian regimes.
Learning outcomes
Students should be able to:
- describe key historical moments in the 20th century in Central Europe
- compare manifestations of avant-garde concepts in different media
- understand relation/position of different art and cultural forms in Nazi and later Communist regimes
Syllabus
  • The course is opened by the general historical introduction of 20th-century history, then chronologically covers the development of each cultural medium and its specifics (following the shift from the dominance of theatre in the 19th century to the relevance of film and other audiovisual media, including TV).
